Dad’s Corner

20130623-140603.jpg

It seems like after every family celebration I get to write a post about how I surprised so-and-so with a visit. Sadly, this isn’t one of those posts. I didn’t buy a plane ticket home for Father’s Day even though I really, really wanted to! I’m trying to save up for future visits and such and I had just been home a month ago. I got to feel semi-included though with a FaceTime call and a group text convo complete with picture updates. Dad got a special meal, of course, but as always, the ‘puppy brother’ tends to take over everything. I tried to keep this balanced though and limited the puppy pictures to just two!

I mentioned last time I was home that there has been a casual competition to ‘make the blog,’ which I think dad has already won with his enthusiasm alone! SO, in honor of dad, this is Dad’s Corner. I missed a good meal! They barely had time to digest all of this before my mom and dad were off to ALASKA the next day! I’m so glad they got to go on a trip they’ve been dreaming of for so long to celebrate a very special anniversary. Us kids are so fortunate to have great parents that have taught us that it’s important to work hard and do great things but also how equally important it is to have a sense of humor and see as much of the world as possible! Oops, mom kind of snuck in on Dad’s Corner somehow! I hope dad can deal with that…I really wanted to include a picture of his famous (and probably record breaking) soft serve ice cream cone towers. The only one I could find from my own camera is the first one we ever took and it looks pretty wimpy. Since then, he has really perfected the art. Uh oh, I smell a Dad’s Corner part 2. 20130623-140616.jpg

I had to throw in a cool picture from another past anniversary (I think) in honor of the most recent one! All you need is love. : )

This is our puppy brother taking over the whole phone chat and looking right at me! haha! 20130623-140630.jpg

And here he is getting ready to be shipped off to visit me. Why so sad? No overnight shipping for this pup. : P

InstaBeps :: Puppies, Cookies, Repeat

20130224-230519.jpgThe past couple weeks truly have been all about puppies and cookies. I certainly can’t complain! Despite that, it’s somehow managed to also be an incredibly stressful couple of weeks. One day in particular was so hectic that it literally made me sick. Ugh! I think things will be getting back to normal very soon though! I know that I tend to post a lot of puppy pictures on here…I don’t even have a puppy of my own, unfortunately! I usually walk just a few dogs during the week for some extra cash and for fun.  I helped someone out for a few days recently and met sooo many dogs. This explains why there might be a bit of a puppy overload here for tonight. I’m guessing you all won’t mind that too much. I also ate/bought an inexcusable number of cookies. Some I made, some were gifts, and some were just on sale, but very few were shared. Oops.

PS I’m stealing the ‘Insta-name’ title from a post I saw from Sincerly Jules! I thought it was too cute not to. 20130224-230710.jpg

Cool.20130224-230725.jpg

I don’t think I’ll get used to stumbling across this view. A pretty wonderful Valentines afternoon. 20130224-230840.jpg

Took me a while to fashion a vase. I was so surprised and excited to receive these pretty roses! 20130224-230905.jpg

I could have posted way more cookies pictures…I’ll stick with this one to reduce embarrassment. 20130224-230919.jpg

Awesome guy! 20130224-230928.jpg

Clam chowder cravings are pretty easily satisfied around here. 20130224-230940.jpg

Weekend hair projects…20130224-231134.jpgI nearly let these strawberries go bad! Turned them into a delicious quick bread.

Insta What?

20130210-141839.jpgI don’t usually have such a hard time coming up with post titles. It’s hard for me to even start writing a post if I haven’t come up with a title first. This is an Instagram post…there are lots of ways “Insta” can play into a title phrase. Too many. I like rhyming, I like alliteration, I like cheesy. So many opportunities, but none of them seem original. What do you think? If you were titling this post, what would you choose?? I would love to know!

It’s been a week mostly dedicated to organizing, preparing for a blizzard, and using said blizzard as an excuse to eat like a child. I was pretty busy the first half of the week with school/work things. The weekend has been very slow and relaxing, which I don’t mind at all! I’ll be continuing the laziness by watching the Grammy’s, snacking all day, and possibly tending to my hair…Have a good night!20130210-141854.jpgAw, she is getting so big! Do any of you remember her from my New Year post?? She’s not mine, but I take her and her sister for walks every week. They give me a good dose of Golden Retriever while I’m away from home! 20130210-141913.jpgWhen you don’t have to worry about driving/digging out your car, a storm is just a good excuse to lounge and eat junk food. 20130210-141921.jpgGood morning, Nemo. [EOTW] Treats of the Week

20130120-223925.jpgStill no kitchen this week = more take out! I don’t mind, but I am looking forward to some kind of kitchen project soon. This week’s pictures are all about sweets and treats. The most special treat was the Magnolia cupcake that my sister brought back from a trip to NYC! Hmm I have a feeling my kitchen project will involve sugar! 20130120-223931.jpg

A pre-movie bear claw at Panera. We saw Zero Dark Thirty and I thought it was really good! 20130120-223943.jpg

Used a Starbucks gift card the next night! I ❤ cheesecake + brownies 20130120-223959.jpg

What I ate almost every morning while the kitchen was inaccesible. I call it sunshine bagel. : -p20130120-224004.jpgSnacked on truffle fries and nachos while watching the Patriots tonight. Luckily I’m not a dedicated fan!

Denver Places – Steuben’s

photo

Paul and I ate at Steuben’s Food Service in Denver on New Year’s Eve. We didn’t want to go anywhere fancy, we just wanted some good food and a cool, kinda retro, atmosphere. Steuben’s turned out to be the perfect place! We both started with one of their cocktails. I had a Second Best and Paul had a Sazerac. Off to a good start! They had a special, huge, menu for the night. It was a great night to go because you could choose from their brunch and dinner items. It was an awesome selection, but also really hard to decide! From mac & cheese, to lobster rolls and even étouffée, (I love cajun!) I finally decided to try the chicken & waffles. I’ve been wanting to try it since college when I would see kids making their own waffles on fried chicken nights in the dining hall. I remember when I was younger we would sometimes drive by a restaurant simply named ‘Chicken and Waffles’ and we would all laugh about how weird that sounded. Little did I know, it’s gooooood. It came with maple syrup, red eye syrup, and white gravy. I liked alternating depending on what was on my fork. Just waffle = maple, just chicken = gravy, both = red eye. Paul had the skirt steak, which came topped with herb butter (yes!) and tons of fries. I had a bite and the steak was super flavorful – really good! We both cleaned our plates. The waiter told me how ‘proud’ he was of me for eating it all…I’ve come to expect waiter compliments when I eat all my food now. Hasn’t happened since, darn.

We really liked the vibe here and had a great time. After we left we wished we had come in later so we could have stayed for their countdown! It felt like a really fun, laid back place to ring in the new year.

Happy New Year!

20130101-015447

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you all had a great, safe, fun night. Paul and I went to a really cool restaurant where I finally tried chicken and waffles! I’ll post a little more on that later. 2012 was a fairly eventful year. I moved, I started grad school, I met some cool dogs, and most importantly I started this blog! ; ) Here are some iPhone pics that captured a few highlights. And here’s to 2013!

20130101-021631.jpg20130101-015858.jpgNo surprise here – I cooked and ate lots of cool stuff. I had fun cooking this colorful cake and my sausage stuffed turkey. I also tried poutine for the first (and second) time! I always planned on waiting until my next trip to Canada to try it, but I just couldn’t hold off any longer.

Eats of the Day :: Manhattan Sausage

20121223-212045.jpg

I’ve done an Eats of the Week post every Sunday since I started this blog. Well, silly me, I already shared most of my eats in separate posts this week. Today I don’t have a collection of photos from the week, but I couldn’t break the streak, so I’m cheating a little. These are my eats of the day instead. (Pretend I remembered to take a picture of my Dunkin Donuts bagel this morning.)

We spent today in Manhattan, KS eating and spending some time with family. We always go to a place called Hibachi Hut when we’re in town. It’s a place that my parents ate at when they went to school here and we’ve all grown to love. I feel like my posts lately have gradually been revealing 1) my love for sausage and 2) my state jumping history. I lived in the south as a toddler (LA, GA) and have held on to my Cajun eating habits ever since. It’s always a treat to eat red beans and rice with homemade sausage when we visit. For dinner we went to Famous Dave’s. I had never been to one. Everyone was telling me that the one in Manhattan is much better than the one closer to our home. Once again, I had sausage. I didn’t even think twice about it, but I would justify it by saying that one was Cajun and one was BBQ. Totally acceptable, right? The side of jalapeno Mac & Cheese was awesome! I am super stuffed now and debating making a trip to the hotel fitness center…
