A Taste of Foods to Come

I always get mega excited when I try a recipe that is so delicious that it’s worth repeating. I have found a lot of those lately, which is awesome, but despite my enthusiastic texts to my mom and sister immediately following the consumption of a repeatable dish, I never actually repeat it. No matter how good, I am not a recipe repeater. I used to be pretty against outfit repeating. I’m sure this was influenced in some way by the Lizzie Mcguire Movie (anyone?). These days though, I am ALL for outfit repeating. I mean, some weeks I catch myself repeating basically the same outfit every day with just a minor tweak or two…dark skinny jeans, army green utility jacket, white or grey t-shirt, navy Keds = big YES for me.  I of course still love changing my outfits up every so often, but when it comes to cooking dinner I love variety and experimentation, which evidently translates to no repeats. Ever. This isn’t even something I realized until just recently because I used to have a tiny rotation of go-to dishes. No idea what to make and don’t want to go to the store? Ok, time to make some carbonara. Those go-to’s have been neglected as of late and for the moment, I’m totally cool with that. Here are my top 10 recent repeatable dishes that I probably will never repeat but would totally be happy to eat again (Whoa). Most surprising to me is how many salads are on this very official list! [EOTW] Worn Out

Something about this week really wore me out! It felt very busy and I can’t really put my finger on why. I still feel like there are so many things that I wanted/needed to get done that just didn’t happen. I usually start the week with a lot of motivation to be organized and productive. Somehow that feeling always seems to get away from me. This has certainly applied to the kitchen lately as well…although I think I’m slowly digging my way out of that rut. I enjoyed working on a few fun and yummy projects that will likely have posts of their own coming up. But for now, here’s a little preview of what I’ve been up to on the cooking front. [EOTW] Fumble

I wish that my final football food related post could be titled ‘touchdown!’ but unfortunately I had to land on fumble instead. I didn’t even come up with anything creative to make for the Super Bowl, but somehow it all went wrong. So wrong that I didn’t even take pictures of what I made! I also didn’t really eat much of it. I tried to make the classic wings, pizza rolls, and mozzarella stick combo from scratch, which I’ve done before with great results. Things just weren’t going my way this time. My wings were just OK, I overcooked the pizza rolls, and just totally failed on the mozz sticks. If only I had been blogging here last year when I put effort into making team themed food (New England and Manhattan style clam chowder)!

Anyway, the rest of the week was also pretty lackluster. I relied a lot on quick pasta dishes because I had classes a couple nights this week. I also became utterly obsessed with these fudge stripe cookies. Not very sophisticated, I know. I had them for the first time when we were stranded in the basement and now I can’t get enough. Oh, and how could I forget – There was a possible kitchen mouse sighting that put me in too much fear to enter the kitchen for two days. And when I say possible sighting I mean possibly imaginary. Heh.

[EOTW] Clean it Out

DSC_1534Out with the old has been my motto this week. I’ve had the urge to clean out my desk, my cosmetics, and especially the freezer! Hasn’t really expanded to my closet yet though…I planned meals around what was sitting in the freezer and cabinets. I really only had to buy a few dairy products and produce on my first shopping trip back in Boston! I’m happy with the clean-out progress so far. It will probably continue on for another week or two. I was going to make a meat sauce tonight to go with some gluten free pasta I tried to make with my new pasta machine, but…that was a disaster, so it was delivery pizza instead! Oh well! Check out what I used up and purchased below!

By the way, I’m really glad you all enjoyed the Starbucks lemon cake photos! I certainly enjoyed eating it all week. : ) I hope some of you try it soon!

[EOTW] Eating Sawdust

It’s been an unusual week. There has been absolutely NO cooking. Why? Well, as you can see below, the kitchen is trapped behind sheets of plastic. Some of the floors are getting a makeover and some rooms are ditching the carpet to match. No cooking, but lots of noise, sawdust and takeout! We haven’t been able to leave the basement much so we created a stash of fruit, cookies, and crackers nearby. The floors look really nice though! Should be back to cooking again soon…although it might be hard to get back into the swing of things!

PS Nutella & Go! is the best packaged snack ever. And a perfect airport companion.

[EOTW] No Resolution

I guess this post makes it pretty obvious that I made no resolution to eat healthy in 2013! And I don’t feel even a little bit bad about that. ; ) I’m all about eating a balanced diet, but I’m also all about eating what makes me happy! I do get full pretty easily…moderation is a good thing (unless cheese is involved…or chocolate, or…). As far as eating goes, this year I just hope to learn lots of new recipes and enjoy lots of great meals with great people.

I left out a couple of meals from the week because I’m planning on posting about them separately. We tried a couple cool new places that I would like to share with any Denver dwellers, or future visitors. Aside from that, we planned a couple meals around football, which seems to have happened a lot this season! We had delicious and totally homemade chili to enjoy during the Fiesta Bowl. The football part didn’t go so well for us – boo! But it’s all good, that’s why we stocked up on Ben and Jerry’s! I hope you all have had a great start to the new year whether you’re on a health kick or not!

[EOTW] Chocolate and Cheese

I haven’t really come up with any New Year’s Resolutions yet, but putting together this post is making me think that I need to remember to take pictures of my eats of the week! I don’t know what the deal is, but I kept forgetting this week. I don’t think there was anything too noteworthy that’s been left out other than my dinner tonight. We went out for Mexican food and I had a really delicious (and cheesy) Chimichanga. I guess I was too hungry to think about snapping a picture before destroying it!

Eats of the Day :: Manhattan Sausage

I’ve done an Eats of the Week post every Sunday since I started this blog. Well, silly me, I already shared most of my eats in separate posts this week. Today I don’t have a collection of photos from the week, but I couldn’t break the streak, so I’m cheating a little. These are my eats of the day instead. (Pretend I remembered to take a picture of my Dunkin Donuts bagel this morning.)

We spent today in Manhattan, KS eating and spending some time with family. We always go to a place called Hibachi Hut when we’re in town. It’s a place that my parents ate at when they went to school here and we’ve all grown to love. I feel like my posts lately have gradually been revealing 1) my love for sausage and 2) my state jumping history. I lived in the south as a toddler (LA, GA) and have held on to my Cajun eating habits ever since. It’s always a treat to eat red beans and rice with homemade sausage when we visit. For dinner we went to Famous Dave’s. I had never been to one. Everyone was telling me that the one in Manhattan is much better than the one closer to our home. Once again, I had sausage. I didn’t even think twice about it, but I would justify it by saying that one was Cajun and one was BBQ. Totally acceptable, right? The side of jalapeno Mac & Cheese was awesome! I am super stuffed now and debating making a trip to the hotel fitness center…

[EOTW] CARBS!

20121216-193022.jpgI had a few posts planned for this week that just didn’t happen (yet!). I had a presentation to prepare for all week, but now that’s over, yay! Then when I heard about the terrible event in Newtown, my planned blog posts felt really unimportant and frivolous. I’ve worked in elementary schools and can’t even imagine going through something like this. Just awful.

Looking back at my food pics from this week, they seem to be all about carbs. My favorite. Sandwiches, flour tortillas, and I even snuck slices of bread into a baked egg dish. I may only have one cinnamon roll picture posted here, but believe me…there were many more than one consumed this week. I also finally got some chai latte K-Cups this week, which made a perfect combination!
